As we move from Spring to Summer – and that all important Christmas Holiday – now is the time to think about ensuring that you are able to remain healthy through this next hectic period!

We have done all the research for you and combined our own experiences with some other articles from the web to come up with our list of Great Travel Tips – How to stay healthy when traveling.

Kimmy Hayes has put together healthy travel tips in her article Staying Healthy while Flying which we have edited a little to cover general traveling.. and mixed it with some other great ideas from the Survival Guide to Safe and Healthy Travel (Content source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID); Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ)   Whilst some of this information is “USA” specific, every country will have its own Consulates and Representatives so research these before you go.  Now, read on!

Staying healthy while traveling is a concern for many travelers. There are risks involved with spending several hours confined with stale recycled air and family or strangers. To keep yourself healthy on your travels, there are a few precautions that you may want to take.  Importantly, pack your carry-on wisely to help yourself stay healthy while flying.

Its all in the planning – Be Proactive

Take steps to anticipate any issues that could arise during your trip. The information in this section will help you plan for a safe and healthy trip.

Staying Healthy Starts at Home – what to do before you go

After being proactive about your travel, and ticking off all the things you need to do prior to leaving, additional staying healthy while traveling starts at home. In order to prepare yourself at home for a healthy trip consider packing the following in your personal item carry on:

  • Pack a travel-size bottle of hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes plus a pack of tissues
  • Your own fill-able water bottle (will need to be empty to start with on international flights)
  • A neck pillow
  • Snacks such as fresh fruit, nuts, high-protein bars
  • Flip flops/thongs or slippers and socks
  • Sleep mask
  • Ear plugs
  • Your own entertainment – be it books, ipod, ipod etc (and don’t forget your chargers!)

All of the above can be packed into your cabin baggage, but some extra things you might like to think about in your check-in baggage might include:

  • Small first aid kit (for those small emergencies)
  • Sunscreen, hat and appropriate summer clothing
  • Sting relief cream
  • Pain relief
  • Eye Drops
  • Your favourite healthy recipes (particularly if you are staying in a holiday home and have the capacity to cook)

No one wants to think about getting sick or hurt during a trip, but sometimes these things happen. You may not be able to prevent every illness or injury, but you can plan ahead to be able to deal with them.

Prepare Your Immune System

Consider preparing your body by helping it to build its immune system to have an easier time fighting off viruses. Three days before your flight:

  • Take extra Vitamin C and B Complex to boost your immune system.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Eat high-protein, low carb meals with plenty of fresh veggies.
  • Drink at least 2 litres of fresh water per day (throughout the day).

Lastly, you may consider taking these steps once on the plane, train, or automobile to ensure you stay healthy during your travels:

  • Use your anti-bacterial wipes to clean your seat armrests, tray, seat belt buckle and any other frequently used surfaces in your seat area.
  • Don’t use the backseat pocket. It’s the dirtiest place on a plane and many other forms of transportation. Everyone uses them, but no one is cleaning them.
  • To boost circulation, walk to the bathroom and down the aisles as frequently as possible. At the very least, do this every hour.  Be considerate of your neighbour though.
  • Stretch or do yoga in your seat every 30 minutes.
  • Make sure to wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom.
  • Use a paper towel to turn off faucets and open doors.
  • Drink 250ml of water for every hour of flight.
  • Avoid drinking soda, alcohol, and caffeine during the flight.
  • Don’t use headphones, blankets, or pillows, supplied by the airline, unless you know they are brand new. Bring your own if you can.
