Top things to do in Mt Tamborine

We are always looking for some great reviews and information on the best places to visit in our Northern Rivers Region and this time we have come up with the Top things to do in Mt Tamborine.  From Casuarina, we are heading north and a little west – into the beautiful, majestic and sumptuous Gold Coast Hinterland to the quaint and peaceful Tamborine Mountain region.  With its close proximity to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and our own Northern Rivers area, Mt Tamborine is great for a day trip from our beaches at Casuarina and a perfect compliment to your beach holiday.  Mt Tamborine is an easy one-hour drive from Casuarina NSW via the M1 motorway or take the scenic route via Springbrook and Advancetown Lake (2 hours).

We found this fantastic blog on Queensland Blog “the Official Blog for Holidays in Queensland”, authored by Hannah Statham.  Read on for all the details and wonderful information… (oh and we can’t resist updating some of the links and adding in a few comments of our own :-))  (Note: The original article wording is in italics)

Gary Poole knows Mt Tamborine better than most. As the owner of The Escarpment Retreat & Day Spa, he loves to help visitors experience the mountain as a local, and here he reveals his top tips.

Best coffee
As a coffee snob, I have to say the best brew on the mountain is at the Spice of Life Café and Deli, serving up an organic blend in the heart of North Tamborine. Locals also love the Mt Tamborine Coffee Plantation, where the organic beans are grown, picked and roasted on the mountain just behind their shop.

The Mount Tamborine Coffee Plantation is a small family owned and operated boutique coffee plantation and roastery specialising in producing high quality gourmet coffee. They are located approximately 40 kilometres west of the world famous Gold Coast Beaches, high on the fertile plateau of Mount Tamborine.  Their plants have been selected from the world’s finest stock. The rich volcanic soil, pure mountain water and high altitude (550 metres above sea level), combined with their organic growing principles, make their beans some of the most sought after in Australia and the world.  All their handpicked beans are processed and roasted on site to ensure uncompromising quality and their products are available in whole beans or ground and custom roasts are available on request.

Favourite dinner spot
The Old Church is off the tourist track and you’ll sit among locals who return to this restaurant for its sumptuous menu and degustation options. In winter you can sit around a roaring fire, sipping wine, and enjoying winter warmers like slow roasted five spiced duck and sticky date pudding.

For something less formal, Deli Vino is where I’d go. Located at the start of North Tamborine in the commercial centre, it’s the perfect spot for a casual lunch, afternoon tapas over a few vinos or a cosy dinner for two with its European-style menu. Breakfast fiends should note their eggs benedict is sensational too.

Top spots for a tipple
With eight wineries, two breweries and one distillery condensed into eight-kilometres, you’re spoilt for choice on Mt Tamborine. My recommendation is the Witches Falls Winery – where both the red and white are full bodied and fresh but won’t break the bank.

Must-do activity
I’d recommend starting your diet after any visit to the mountain. Mt Tamborine is famous for three things: alcohol, cheese and fudge, and no trip is complete without sampling all three.

Depending on your choice of tipple – you can visit the amazing Tamborine Mountain Distillery. Owner Michael has a range of 50 different liquors, and has 150 (now 260+) international awards on his mantelpiece – including awards for his Vodka in Russia and his Limoncello in Italy.

Beer drinkers can taste test a range of eight designer beers at Mt Tamborine Brewery, crafted by their own brew master and using ancient recipes dating back hundreds of years.  With its open and easy atmosphere and stunning views of Mt Tamborine, the MT Brewery is the perfect place for relaxing and catching up with friends and family.

For cheese, visit the Witches Chase Cheese factory where you can watch expert cheese masters at work. Their signature blend is the Tambembert – a rich, creamy Camembert with a special Mt Tamborine twist.

As for fudge, there’s one true fudge guru on the mountain – Mandy Ffrench – and her shop, Granny Macs, serves a variety of sweet treats.

Favourite way to spend a Sunday
Try to coincide your visit with one of Mt Tamborine’s local monthly markets. The Showgrounds Market  is on the second Sunday of the month and is full of arts, crafts, music, kids rides and local fudge. The School Market is on the last Sunday of the month and is more about bric-a-brac, antiques, plants, and second-hand books.

Other Sunday Markets at Mt Tamborine

  • The Green Shed Produce Markets – Held every Sunday (7.00am-12.00pm), located at The Showground, 386-398 Main Western Rd, Mount Tamborine, Queensland, is the local market for fresh fruit & vegetables, and is open every Sunday from 7.00am to noon. We also sell flowers, honey, nuts, herbs and plants….
  • Tamborine Mountain School Markets – Held on the last Sunday of each month (8.00am – 2.00pm), the ‘Markets on the Mountain’ is sponsored by the local State School on land at the corner of Curtis and Long Road. Renowned for some of the best burgers in town, here you can enjoy a walking breakfast with pancakes….

Combine this with a wander along one of the many national parks walking trails – my pick is Curtis Falls – and you’ll have a perfect Sunday on your hands.

Other great walks

Macdonald Rainforest Circuit – 1.4km circuit (Allow 30 minutes) Easy grade. This relatively flat track passes through rainforest with large strangler figs, piccabeen palm groves and tall trees festooned with vines and ferns. The track is ideal for birdwatchers and visitors seeking a quiet rainforest walk away from road noise and large numbers of people.

Tamborine Mountain Skywalk – ia magical setting of 30 private acres of magnificent rainforest alongside a kilometre of tumbling creek and rockpools, Skywalk offers a new eco-adventure exploring the beautiful rainforest in a different way. Discover rainforest canopies and breath-taking flora and fauna along The Walk

Best free activity
One of the best things to do on the mountain is to watch the sun set at The Knoll National Park. ‘Knoll Park’ is just a short drive out of town, and the road conveniently passes the IGA so you can stock up on dips and crackers to supply your evening picnic.

Most romantic spot
I’d recommend sitting out on the western edge (where the hang gliders take off during the day) to watch the setting sun over the majestic landscape.

If money is no object…
I’d go for a balloon ride over the mountain to see this wonderland from above. Take it from me, the views are heavenly.

Family owned, Hot Air Balloon Scenic Rim flies every day. Their hot air balloon take-offs are so gentle, that quite often our passengers don’t realize the balloons have lifted off. See the horizon expand and breathe in all the mountain fresh air as everyone has a “window” seat in our wicker baskets!

A family day out – Thunderbird Park

Thunderbird Park’s range of onsite adventure activities adds to the fun. Fossick for gemstone-filled thundereggs formed when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Find treasure and meet Rockodile, Thunderbird Park’s rock expert. Take excitement to the top at Tree Top Challenge (formerly known as Adventure Parc), Australia’s longest and highest adventure ropes course. Climb cable ladders, balance on rope bridges, catch a flying fox, crawl through tunnels, maneuver on suspended trunks or jump from great heights. Go horse trail riding, bush walking or play laser skirmish in an outstanding rainforest battlefield, themed with an authentic Kokoda village.
