We are so excited to announce that La Maison Pacifique, our beautiful beachfront holiday home in Casuarina NSW has made Alluxia’s Best in Travel list 2013.  Here’s what they say!:

“One of the most incredible holiday houses we’ve seen this year. The interior design by the lovely and talented Di Hendy has you wanting to settle in and never leave. The parents’ retreat is simply heavenly while downstairs the biggest decisions are whether to laze by the lap pool or stroll across to the beach. Such decisions…”

Top ten tips to end your holiday on a high!

Top ten tips to end your holiday on a high!

Top ten tips to end your holiday on a high!

Top ten tips to end your holiday on a high!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year….until you come back from your holiday and it’s over. But wait! You can stave off the end-of-holiday doldrums (and maybe start the plan for a beach getaway for this time next year?), with just a few little adjustments.

Our inspiration for these tips come from a great post from The Huffington Post By but we have added in a few extra comments too!

1. Make a wish list of “home” adventures

Just because your holiday is over doesn’t mean the fun and adventures have to stop!  Write a list of all the  local things you would like to do and start ticking them off!  Could be as simple as a walk up to the local highest point or a picnic in the local park.  Could involve taking a drive on one of the local tourist drives (destination: local pub/cafe/eatery) and then home again.  The adventures don’t have to stop just because your holiday has!

2. Make a shrine to your “happy place.”

Display a jar of sand from the beach where you spent Christmas, or a teacup from your mum’s house. Maybe a photo collage on your laptop screensaver or think about a Pinterest board to remind you of your happy times.  They’ll reassure you that those fun times won’t be forgotten.

3. Remind yourself why you love home

Is it friends? Family? Your old familiar coffee shop? Typing a quick list of the things you’re thankful for at home will make returning from vacation-land feel much cheerier.  Add it to your happy place shrine.

4. Get stuff done before you leave

There is nothing worse than a pile of smelly laundry, accumulated dust, unpaid bills or un-emptied bins greeting you after your return from a blissful break!  Even the thought of it could spoil your holiday whilst you are away!  Get as much done as you can before you go and revel in the cleanliness when you return!

5. Take a buffer day

If you weren’t so stellar as to handle tasks beforehand, a day of catch-up will do the trick.  Either that or just a day to clear up after your holiday and pack away all your gear.  Its a great chance to get back into your usual routines and remember – take it slow. Don’t forget to make those calls to catch up with family and friends who are probably itching to hear all about your trip!  ..and as a final tip – book a catch up with friends that you have missed (or send a text saying hi – I’m home – photo attached!).

6. Plan a mini-vacation for next week

It doesn’t have to be big, and it can literally be to the local cafe. Just give your brain something to look forward to during the long months ahead (until your next vacation of course!).

7. Consider takeaway

Well, given you have probably cleaned out the fridge before you left (!), there’s probably nothing nice and fresh to eat anyway.  Don’t feel you have to rush out to get all the groceries to get a great meal prepared.  You could be really organised and have a “freezer” meal ready for your home arrival (spaghetti bolognaise is our favourite) or if not, don’t stress, one more meal “out” won’t hurt.

8. Attack jet lag

The only thing worse than returning to work is returning to work with droopy eyelids. Stay up late, go to bed early, drink loads of water… whatever extra effort you personally require to stay lag-free.

9. Hold on to a vacation habit

Keep the hot-chocolate-after-dinner routine you established during holiday travels. Or call your friend for a late-night chat like the ones you had on vacation. There’s no point in scrapping these tidbits of fun!

10. Just be

Your unpacking, washing etc doesn’t have to be done all at once.  Take a moment to have a nice cup of tea/chilled wine on your return and a few moments to revel in the fact that you have had a great holiday away.  Even if your holiday wasn’t quite as great as you planned, take a few moments to laugh at some of your adventures.  Bring a smile to your dial with a chat with a friend about your trip and be ready to think about where your next adventure might take you!

…Have we convinced you yet that your holiday doesn’t have to finish when you get home?  Have we inspired you to think about a beach holiday?  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.  We even have Lisa and Pete’s top tips on things to do in Kingscliff!  Check out our blog and news, location and attractions and what’s on and markets for more great tips and things to do on your Northern Rivers summer holidays!

Must haves for your Long Haul Flight

Must haves for your long haul flight

Must Haves for your Long Haul Flight
Must Haves for your Long Haul Flight

At La Maison Pacifique, we have often welcomed guests from overseas to our beautiful beachfront property in Casuarina NSW.  For these guests, long haul flights can be just that – a long haul – but we have done some research (and with a little help/inspiration from A Luxury Travel Blog) have come up with an Australian-ised version of the must haves for your long haul flight.

The titles for longest flights goes to (1) a Qantas route between Sydney and Dallas – which at about 13,700 kilometres is the longest route – and (2) a Delta flight between Johannesburg and Atlanta, which at 17 hours will hold the title of longest duration.

Cashmere travel set

Ralph Lauren Cashmere Travel set
Ralph Lauren Cashmere Travel set

Airplanes are notoriously cold, and there’s nothing worse than shivering for eight hours when all you want to do is sleep.

Why risk an airline blanket (if your airline even supplies one) when you can invest in a cashmere travel set from Ralph Lauren? The luxurious Cabled Cashmere Travel Set (pictured) contains a blanket and eye mask which come in a zippered bag that doubles as a pillow. The set comes in grey, navy blue or black and can be personalized for free. US$395.00.  We also like Banjo & Matilda’s Travel Blanket and Eye Mask Set at US$275.00

Both are perfect – especially for frequent flyers!

Noise-canceling Headphones and Ear Buds

Bose noise cancelling ear buds
Bose noise cancelling ear buds

The brand new Studio headphones from Beats by Dre are a traveler’s dream. Lightweight, durable and comfortable, the Studio headphones are built for the most active road warrior. Frequent fliers will love the precision sound and Adaptive Noise Canceling capabilities, but what makes these headphones a requirement for long haul flights is its 20-hour rechargeable battery. The Studio headphones are compatible with mobile phones and feature inline remote control, allowing the user to adjust volume, play/pause, skip forward/back, change playlists, as well as answer/end phone calls and switch between calls on an iphone. Beats Studio headphones are available in black, white, red and blue. AU$299.

If you prefer the ear buds you can’t go past the Bose Noise Cancelling ones for $AU399.  The have headphones too for AU$449 so the choice is yours!

Moisturizing skincare

We found these tips on Conde Nast Traveller’s Beauty Tips: How to stay fresh on a red-eye or long haul flight.

Prep your skin with exfoliation

Keeping your skin hydrated actually starts at home, not on the plane, says, dermatologist Dr. Marina Peredo, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. “Exfoliating your skin is important because it gets rid of the top layer of dead skin cells that prevent any moisturizer from absorbing into the skin,” she explains. Swapping out your daily facial cleanser with a gentle exfoliating scrub with smaller granules the morning of your travel date will do the trick.

Moisturize—the right way

Having a moisturizer with ultra-hydrating hyaluronic acid is essential for a long flight—but Dr. Peredo has a trick that’ll make it even more effective. “Ask for a cool, wet cloth to pat onto skin before you apply your moisturizer,” she says. “The lotion will absorb and retain better in the skin when your face is damp.” As for eye cream, look for ingredients like retinol to plump and smooth, peptides like amino acids which help produce more collagen in the skin, and antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, and E that have significant preventive and repairing effects to the skin.

Sit up and circulate

If you can handle it, avoid lowering your seat all the way back, says Dr. Peredo. “Fluid may retain in your eyes, causing bags to develop.” And regardless of how you sleep, make sure to take a stroll a couple of times throughout the flight when the “fasten seat belt” sign is off. The blood circulation you’ll get walking around will do wonders for holding off bloat and keeping your skin rosy and “awake” looking after you de-board.

Lucas’s Paw Paw Ointment

A shameless plug I know – but you won’t find many Aussie households who don’t know about this fantastic ointment –  locally produced by an Australian owned company! In his 1906 handbook, after years of research, botanist T.P. Lucas stated that he believed the papaw was the finest natural medicine yet discovered.  The papaw ointment that T.P. Lucas went on to develop is still a proven remedy used world-wide for its therapeutic benefits.  It is perfect for dry lips on long haul flights, great for Minor Burns, Sunburn & Scalds, helps heal Gravel Rash, Cuts & Minor Open Wounds, reduces inflamation in Nappy Rash & Chaffing, eases the pain of Splinters & Thorns and perfect for the temporary relief of the symptoms of dermatitis and eczema.  What more could you want?  Found at chemists and supermarkets around Australia, you can get it by the tube or pot and is perfect for travelers.

Sleep aid

Sleeping on a plane isn’t the easiest task in the world, so you may need the help of a light sleep aid. We are loathe to recommend particular ones, but do consult your local health care professional, naturopath or doctor for the one best suited to you.  Remember to ensure that whatever you choose does not clash with any current medication you may take.

Pyjamas

Speaking of sleep, one of the best ways to get as much of it as possible is to be as comfortable as possible. If the idea of wearing the same clothes for 24 hours grosses you out, consider packing a pair of lightweight pyjamas. The loose fit of sleepwear will help with your circulation, as well as help stabilize your body temperature so you can fall into a deep sleep. We love the classic look of the J.Crew Vintage Pajama Set for women, and the Cotton Poplin Pajama Set for men. US$79.50 and US$69.50 respectively.  Alternatively, you can’t go past Peter Alexander’s fabulous range of pyjamas with a style and size to suit everyone!  Can be fun too!

Ansco Toothbrush Travel Kit

Having fresh breath is directly related to feeling refreshed. Toss one of these handy Ansco toothbrush and toothpaste travel kits in your bag so you can brush before and after sleeping and you’ll feel much better. We’re sure your seatmate will appreciate it too! AU$3.99.

Ok, so now you have your must haves for your long haul flight kit together you can do the final preparations!

Preparing for your flight

Found this “how to” for travelers leaving Australia on flights…  Just a little extra for you and for travel novices, a guide to ensure your traveling experience starts off well.

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!
