Wedding Ettiquette – Social Media Style

Wedding Ettiquette – Social Media Style

Wedding Ettiquette - Social Media Style

Wedding Ettiquette – Social Media Style

In our social media world, there are some wedding ettiquette – social media style tips that you can follow which can ensure that you embrace not only your newly-engaged status, but are mindful of the ettiquette involved – and keeping everyone happy too!

We have found this great article The New Rules of Wedding Etiquette by Simone Hill (published on theknot.com.au) which will give you, (the bridal couple) and your guests some tips and tricks and the do’s and don’ts of wedding ettiquette – social media style.

It’s inevitable that you’ll spread the excitement of your wedding to everyone in your social media network, so follow these rules to avoid a faux pas (or worse!) when it comes to sharing your wedding.

For the bride and groom:

Call your parents before pressing “post” or “tweet.”
Your close friends and family will want to hear it straight from you first.
A Facebook status or tweet might be the most efficient way to get the news out, but it’s not the most personal. You know which friends and family members would appreciate to hear the news directly from you; plus, it’s likely that older family members (like your grandparents!) don’t have Facebook or Twitter accounts and could miss the message altogether.

Change your relationship status in minutes or months…it’s up to you!
There’s no wrong or right time — some couples even do it at the altar!
Once you tie the knot, it’s up to you and your new spouse to decide when to change your relationship status or last name on your social media sites. For some couples, this can be a very important moment; for others, it’s no big deal. So if and when you’re ready to make the change, go for it!

Post pics of your engagement ring. (Everyone can’t wait to see!)
But keep the nitty-gritty details like cost and carat to yourself.
After you post your “engaged” status, your friends and family will be dying to find out what the ring looks like, so indulge them with a photo (you may want to prep with a manicure first!). It’s not bragging to share a pic with the exciting news. Leave out the other details, because how much it cost isn’t anyone else’s business — the point is that it symbolises the commitment you’re making. Everyone’s going to be checking out your hand for the first few months anyway, so make it easy for friends and family to admire from afar.

Designate a “tweeter of honour.”
Enjoy your day and stay off your phone while still keeping everyone updated.
Your wedding day will fly by, and if you’re focused on your phone or tablet the whole time, you’ll miss out on what’s important. Enjoy the guests who have come to celebrate with you, instead of everyone in your social media circles. Strike a balance and designate a tweeter of honour — it could be another bridesmaid who isn’t your maid of honour (she’ll have plenty of responsibilities already!) — to keep your social networks updated throughout the day so you won’t have to. Another option is to schedule tweets beforehand so they’re ready to go without the hassle.

Send out traditional paper invites for the main event.
Email invites are totally okay for pre- and postwedding parties!
Paper invites are the way to go for the actual wedding day. In today’s technology-based world, where your guests receive hundreds of emails a day, a physical invite has become that much more special. That doesn’t mean you have to go over the top with an invite that sings and shoots confetti either. Simple card stock and laser printing will do the trick. A paperless invite for the rehearsal dinner or morning-after brunch is a great option (especially if you want to cut down on stationery costs). Just because the invites are electronic doesn’t mean they won’t have style or be personal to you. There are plenty of sites that let you customise e-invites so that they’ll look beautiful and unique to you.

For the guests:

Wait to publicly post your congratulations.
If the couple hasn’t made the announcement, then you shouldn’t spill the big news for them.
It’s exciting when you’re the first to find out your best friend or sister is getting married, but hold off on the public congrats until they’re ready to share the news themselves. They might be waiting for an important reason (like they haven’t even told their parents yet!), and there could be hard feelings involved if others find out they weren’t in-the-know first.

Private message any wedding planning questions.
It can be awkward for the couple’s other Facebook friends who weren’t invited.
If you want to discuss wedding plans with the bride or groom, then it’s polite to do it in a private way. The couple may have hundreds of Facebook friends who aren’t on the invite list, and it’s not fair if each and every detail comes up on their news feed. Brides especially love to share wedding planning details, and she’ll appreciate a friendly ear to listen if you call to find out how it’s going. This is a busy time for the couple too, so don’t be offended if they don’t keep you up to date on every single detail!

Share pics of the bride and groom.
But respect their request if they ask you not to post photos before they do.
It’s great that you want to show what a great wedding the couple threw and Instagram the cake and the flowers. Some couples may want to wait to share photographic details of the wedding until they have photos from their professional photographer, so you should respect their choice. If you’re worried about whether you’re in the clear with posting photos, then wait until a close friend or family member of the couple does so first. Then you’ll know if it’s okay to post away!

Leave the phone in your purse or pocket.
Posting occasionally is okay, but the couple invited you to celebrate their day, not sit there on your phone.
The couple spent a lot of time planning an event that you would enjoy, so don’t spend the entire time on your phone posting about the wedding — go have some fun! It’s okay to share the love a few times, but you shouldn’t opt out of hitting the dance floor in favour of tweeting a play-by-play. Plus, having a phone or tablet out all the time can get in the way of photos, and no one wants to look back on their wedding day to see a guest more engaged with a device than their reception.

Follow directions for the RSVP.
The couple’s inboxes are already full of wedding-related details; a text, email or DM is likely to get lost in the mix.
Most paper invitations will include an RSVP card with an addressed envelope to send it back in, and couples will look for and expect responses by mail (before the deadline!). If you lose the card, then it’s okay to call and find out how the couple would prefer you to RSVP once you know whether you’ll be attending.

Top things to do at Fingal Head

Top things to do at Fingal Head

Top things to do at Fingal Head
The Fingal Head Lighthouse Photo: Cyril Curtain

We at La Maison Pacifique love exploring our local area – and we’ve come up with the Top things to do at Fingal Head for you!

When it comes to odd facts, they don’t come much odder than the fact that this charming Tweed village was named after the mythical Celtic giant Fingal who reportedly built the famous Giant’s Causeway in Ireland.

Fingal Head is situated just across the Queensland border in the Northern Rivers/Tweed Coast area of Northern NSW and is a mecca for those who like to be close to the Gold Coast, but enjoy the quiet serenity of this beautiful border town.

1. The Beach

Firstly, Fingal Head Beach has recently been named the NSW Environment Protection Authority Overall 2013 Clean Beach at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW North Coast and Northern Rivers Regional Clean Beaches – Connecting our Coast Awards for 2013.  What does this mean?  It means that Fingal Head Beach is one of the cleanest in the region and well supported by it local community.  So, your first stop at Fingal Head has to be the beach!

2. The Sheoak Shack

On the bank of the river, under the shade of a Sheoak Tree, the Sheoak Shack is the perfect place to relax. If you are looking for delicious food, coffee or romantic sunset cocktail on the riverbank, the Sheoak Shack is the beach shack for you with a funky laid back daytime vibe or a party atmosphere with live music on Saturday 7pm. (closes 5pm Sat over Winter)

This gallery/cafe showcases the work of high quality local artists and is available for private functions….more Byron than Byron, in sleepy Fingal Head.

3. Fingal Head Lighthouse

Fingal Head Lighthouse was erected in 1872 of stone and painted white, with a fixed white light of 1,000 candelas (later upgraded to 1,500 candelas).

The light tower is not high as it is built on a low headland. The light is effective as it is built on one of the most easterly points of Australia with plenty of deep water offshore.

The lighthouse can be reached with a short walk through remnant coastal rainforest to the headland but the tower itself is closed to the public.

4. Cook Island

Cook Island is one of just a few NSW islands and is located just 600m offshore from Fingal Head and four kilometres south-east of Tweed Heads in northern NSW.  Cook Island was originally named Turtle Island due to the large number of turtles found along the shores.

The Cook Island Aquatic Reserve covers 78 hectares. It includes the waters within and around Cook Island to a 500-metre radius from a survey marker on the 4.6-hectare island. The reserve protects the marine biodiversity of the island’s reef system.

Cook Island Aquatic Reserve provides for a host of activities, including swimming, whale watching, boating and diving.  Thirteen moorings at popular diving locations around the island have replaced the need to anchor. This protects fragile corals and other marine invertebrates while providing safe mooring for vessels (who are able to launch from the nearby Fingal Head boat ramp).

Local Tour company, Aqua Shack do a great ocean kayak tour to Cook Island.  So, if you don’t have your own boat, consider this great tour across to the island!

5. Have a picnic

There are loads of picnic spots, just find your own sanctuary and lay out your spread. Fingal Beach Park has BBQ facilities and a kiddie play area.

6. Razorback Lookout

This is an excellent lookout giving 360deg. views which stretch over the Tweed Valley and Gold Coast. You can see Mt. Warning, the Beaches, the Airport and the homes on the Canals. There is a lovely garden, with seating – perfect for yet another picnic!

If you are wheelchair bound, all you need is somebody with the strength to push you up to the top.

This is a lookout that shouldn’t be missed.

7. Visit the Fingal Rovers SLSC – and swim between the flags!

Fingal Rovers Surf Life Saving Club was started in 1933 to ensure the safety of the beach going public in the Letitia Spit area near Fingal Head. They were formed combining the Murwillumbah Rover Scouts and Fingal Head locals and have been supported over the years by members from Brisbane and Beaudesert as well as Murwillumbah. They often introduce ourselves as being from the “Top Club in NSW” – due to their location right on the NSW Queensland border.

During Summer holidays there are Surf lifesavers/life guards on the beach every day, so it is the perfect place for a swim between the flags! During the week the Life Guards will be between the flags and the weekend and public holidays the Surf Club members will be on the beach.

….Have we convinced you yet that your Casuarina NSW holiday could be your best ever at any time of the year – particularly if you take our advice and head to Fingal Head as part of your stay?  All you have to do now is book your beach holiday!  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.  We even have Lisa and Pete’s top tips on things to do in Kingscliff too!  Check out our blog and news, location and attractions and what’s on and markets for more great tips and things to do on your Northern Rivers summer holidays!

Best Packing Tips

 Best Packing Tips

Best Packing Tips

Best Packing Tips

Your holiday has booked, you’ve planned your tours, you’ve done all the pre-trip purchases and now you are ready to pack – but wait! How do I pack to ensure I get everything in?  What happens if I forget something?  You go into meltdown – until you read our best packing tips – ready for your holiday!  Breathe, all will be well 🙂

To help with this, we found this great article called The Ultimate Guide to Successful Packing By on May 23, 2013 in Luggage, Travel Equipment, Travel Miscellany from the Luxury Travel Blog.  Read on for Paul’s thoughts (and a few added tips from us!)….

Why do so many people get holiday packing wrong? And are men from Mars and women from Venus when it comes to packing? As airlines tighten their policies on baggage allowance, perfecting the art of packing could save you money as well as reduce stress, so the last minute travel website latedeals.co.uk has come up with this ultimate guide to successful holiday packing.

There is always the temptation to pack everything but the kitchen sink; afterall, if you pack everything then you’ll be fine, right? Wrong, especially now airlines are now getting stricter when it comes to our personal bag allowance.

How we pack

  • 65% of holidaymakers are last minute packers and fill their suitcase the night before they travel
  • Most people FOLD: 68% fold clothes, 22% both fold and roll, 10% just roll clothes
  • 12% of peoplewrite a packing list
  • HALF of us cram extra items into our suitcase just before we leave for the airport
  • The majority of women admit they over pack – 91% claim they never wear all of their clothes
  • 53% went over personal baggage allowances last year

What we pack

  • Most people pack 2 extra pairs of pants per night away
  • On average women pack between 6 pairs of shoes for a week away in the sun
  • 1 in 4 take tea bags abroad

Men pack for Mars, women For Venus

Forget about gender studies – packing a suitcase is where you’ll find truth about the differences between men and women…

  • Men use 98% of what they’ve packed while away on holiday while women only wear 62% of what they’ve packed… more than a quarter is unworn!
  • Men pack late – 90% of men pack the night before
  • Women pack early – 50% start to pack 3+ days ahead
  • The average British man packs 14 items of clothing for one week away while the average British woman packs 44 items of clothing for one week away
  • 7% of men purchased new clothes whilst on holiday / 47% of women purchased new clothes whilst on holiday
  • Men most likely to forget essential items like underwear and toiletries
  • Women most likely to forget accessories like jewellery and sunglasses
  • Men pack ‘items’ of clothing while women pack ‘outfits’
  • Men take a “make do” approach while women are perfectionists & tend to pack for every eventuality and say “better to be safe than sorry”
  • Men mostly carry the bags? Women tend to pack the bags!

The art of holiday packing – how to pack like a pro

This year, you can do it differently, thanks to this, the ultimate guide to successful packing…

  • Roll, don’t fold – you will actually fit in more clothes if you roll them up very tightly and then tightly pack into your case.
  • Make a list – before you even contemplate reaching for suitcase, plan what you will wear by day and what can go with what and stick to it!
  • Don’t be last minute – the optimum time is at least two days before your holiday.
  • Plan to wash – it’s really easy to wash some of your items mid holiday (or easier still, ask your hotel to launder your clothes).
  • Heavy items at the bottom – and keep lighter items that tend to get creased at the top.
  • Make use of shoes – stuff footwear with rolled up underwear, socks, jewellery, and even toiletries. Place footwear around the outside of the case.
  • Buy when you get there – you can buy some consumable items when you get there – saving you even more space!
  • Wear your bulkiest items – if you’re really struggling to pack everything wear it! Layer up.
  • Fragile items – pack any electricals in the centre of your case, cocooned by soft clothes.
  • Pack a powerboard – one powerboard = many less adaptors (and you have less chance of losing your chargers)

Follow these tips and your packing will be a breeze!  And remember,  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot for your next vacation – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.  We even have Lisa and Pete’s top tips on things to do in Kingscliff!  Check out our blog and news, location and attractions and what’s on and markets for more great tips and things to do on your Northern Rivers summer holidays!

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

Top 10 tips for a Memorable Wedding

Top 10 tips for a Memorable Wedding

Top 10 Tips for a Memorable Wedding
Top 10 Tips for a Memorable Wedding

We at La Maison Pacifique are keen on ensuring that your wedding day is special and exciting – so here are some top 10 tips for a memorable wedding.

Adding in some local information but inspired by a great post direct from The Knot, (10 Ways to Make Sure Your Wedding Isn’t Boring), we’ve added a few little extras (from our local knowledge, experience and research) to personalise your day for you, your partner and your guests.

And remember, a wedding is just the start of a wonderful life together, so don’t sweat the small stuff!  Communication is the key and as I always say “It is about what you CAN do”.  If you keep that in mind, you could be up for the best wedding day ever!

10 Ways to Make Sure Your Wedding Isn’t Boring – The Knot

Attending a wedding may be a privilege, but sometimes it’s not always a pleasure. The last thing a couple wants is for their wedding guests to spend the reception checking their watches. Here are 10 tips to keep any wedding guest yawns at bay:

1. Make introductions the night before

A wedding brings together two families and sets of friends — which usually means a big group of people who don’t know each other awkwardly attempting small talk. The solution? Invite relatives and out-of-town guests to the a special dinner the night before to break the ice, and introduce those who might have common interests. (That uncle who always loved Top Gun? Definitely link him to your fiance’s fighter pilot cousin). By the time the wedding rolls around, your guests will have met in a more relaxed atmosphere the evening before and (hopefully) keep the conversations going at the reception.  (Our tip – with plenty of local restaurants in our region, you could try everything from Fins Restaurant to White Jade Restaurant to the Spice Den).

2. Stick to the schedule

No one expects things to run with military precision (especially when it comes to rushing your older relatives), but you don’t want to force your guests to idle around while you take your formal wedding pictures. This is where the cocktail hour comes in. Set up a lounge or shady courtyard for your guests to mingle, and equip the area with snacks, drinks, plenty of places to sit, and even a little music to set the mood and keep the party atmosphere alive. (Our tip – hire some great wedding furniture and create “rooms” or lounging areas which allow guests to relax and mingle…  You want your guests to relax before the formal part of the evening starts..)

3. Don’t let guests go hungry

Two words: hors d’oeuvres. Even if you plan on serving a full dinner at your reception, it’s a good idea to have a few nibbles for your guests to nosh on while they wait for you and your new spouse to make your grand entrance — lest your guests get bored and cranky. Mini empanadas, soup shooters, vegetable skewers, even fried arancini balls are all great options (go for one-bite canapes so guests can chat while they snack). Your guests will be refreshed from the ceremony — and grateful for the sustenance. (Our tip – and don’t forget afterwards – we have seen some great wedding ideas which include everything from take away nibble boxes (as a wedding thankyou) to hiring a take-away coffee/food van ready for when guests leave)..

4. Plan an exit strategy

If you really want guests to be able to enjoy themselves at your reception, arrange for transportation to get them home safely afterward. Some couples choose to throw their reception in a hotel banquet hall and block off rooms for their guests, while others hire a shuttle service to run throughout the night. This extra consideration gives guests the freedom to relax (drink) without worrying about getting home safely when the party wraps up. (Our tip: This works particularly well for destination weddings where guests are likely to be staying close to the venue)

5. Consider your venue

Of course, your budget will be a huge factor in determining where you throw your wedding, but picking an interesting reception site can go a long way toward keeping guests entertained. Many museums will let you rent out their exhibit areas, and zoos often have banquet areas with the animals in full view. Even an otherwise bland reception space can be dressed up with dramatic decor or specialty entertainment (like a photo booth), so be sure to talk to your site manager about your options.  (Our tip – we always like rooms with windows or adjacent to a beautiful garden.  This creates a great ambience and allows guests to have something to talk about throughout the night – “have you been into the garden?” ; “look how beautiful the sea view is from this window!”.  Also, think about using candles as decorations – create your own wedding scent)

6. Work your seating chart

There’s nothing more uncomfortable than being the one couple at a table where you don’t know anyone and everyone else went to high school together — particularly if you can see friends laughing it up five tables away. A well-played seating chart is a cost-free way to make sure your guests spend time with people they like — or even to set them up with someone new! (Our tip: if you are struggling, put tables of friends together to help with the overflow from one table)

7. Put a time limit on toasts

Yes, it’s nice to hear words of encouragement and well wishes, but unless your friends are moonlighting as stand-up comedians, an overly long toast can easily go from sentimental to excruciating. Limit the number and length of toasts to a few key guests (think: maid of honour, best man, your parents), and let everyone get back to the party.  (:-) thinking of the Oscars here!… Are you game to start up the music?)

8. Bring in the…clowns?

Remember that scary clown/magician from your eighth birthday party? Today’s specialty performers are nothing like that. The options for wedding entertainment span from tricked-out DJs to belly dancers to singing waiters — these people are pros at making sure weddings aren’t boring. (Our tip: but make sure it is relevant.  No point having belly dancers at a classic traditional wedding!)

9. Think beyond wedding cake

Wedding cakes are still a staple, but consider expanding the selection for those with a sweet tooth — we’re talking a full dessert bar with everything from apple pies, truffles, cupcakes, lollies, along with local delicacies like cheeses, specialty local icecream or cookies. The bar can double as your wedding favour by setting out gift bags or boxes for your guests to take a snack for the road. (Our tip: think about a visit to the local markets and/or look at the Northern Rivers Food website for local producers and specialties)

10. Relax — seriously

Planning a wedding can be stressful, but when the day arrives, everyone will have more fun if you can overlook any little mishaps (and there’s always something that goes slightly awry) and let loose. Think about it: Do you have fun at parties where the host is incessantly on edge? To avoid sabotaging your good mood, assign any last-minute tasks to a bridesmaid, relative, or your wedding planner — and designate a friend who, if they observe you getting stressed, will ply you with a cocktail or two (Our tip – or just remind you that it is all about having a great day as you start your life with your new partner).

..and if you are thinking about a Destination Wedding in Northern NSW…

Don’t forget that we at La Maison Pacifique specialise in Wedding Accommodation and have a great video showing what is possible.  We have some fantastic wedding friends and contacts around us at Casuarina and many blogs with informative wedding tips.  Our Wedding Accommodation page has offers local information for you – with everything from a wedding planner to venues to day spa – and spa tips (heavenly) to wedding furniture hire, we can put you in touch with our great team of wedding specialists in the beautiful Northern Rivers area, Northern NSW.

Another great tip – and one we learnt from our friends at the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club – if you are planning a Destination Wedding, book your accommodation for a week.  It is often cheaper at weekly rates, (particularly when you book a luxury beachfront holiday home – we’ve done the comparison!).  This means that the bridal party can stay up to the wedding day and (as the main bedroom is quite separate from the rest of the bedrooms), you can have the honeymoon with us as well!  A private beachfront oasis – perfect!  Check out our photos and site plan – we are sure you will be tempted.

Follow these tips and your wedding day promises to be memorable!  And remember,  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot for your next wedding vacation – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.

Top 6 Holiday Spa tips

Top 6 Holiday Spa tips

Top 6 Holiday Spa Tips

Top 6 Holiday Spa Tips

We all love a bit of pampering and being on holiday doesn’t mean that you need to give up on your holiday-spa ideas.  Even if you are unable to access great spas (like our favourite – The Workshop at Cabarita Beach), you can still pamper yourself by following these Top 6 Holiday Spa tips.

Be kind to your face

A rich creme with revitalizing properties is excellent to iron out the travel stresses on your skin.  We like A’kin Purely Revitalising Firming Night Crème which is a nourishing anti-age night cream formulated to firm, lift and smooth skin for visibly reduced lines and wrinkles. It contains fragmented hyaluronic acid to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity, echium oil to reduce deep wrinkles and smooth out skin, and camu camu extract, a powerful antioxidant to help protect the skin.

Don’t forget to protect

In the Australian Climate, sun damage can be your reality, so it is best to protect yourself with a great SPF30 cream  Harper’s Bazaar recommends Garnier’s Miracle Skin Perfector Bb cream for sensitive skin – and we do too! With hypoallergenic formula free from fragrances, the cream helps to keep skin moisturised whilst also balancing uneven skin tone and disguising blemishes.

A Good Scrub

Night-time is your skin’s most optimal time for renewal and repair. After a full day of adventure, cleanse away oil, makeup and environmental pollutants with a scrub.  Keeping in the hypo-allergenic theme, we like, the award-winning St Ives Apricot Scrub deep cleans, instantly leaving skin smooth and glowing

Nail Envy

We personally prefer the natural look, but a great nail polish can give a real boost to your favourite outfit – especially if you team it with a great manicure/pedicure and those to-die-for sandals you bought for your summer holiday!  Book in a manicure before you go, but don’t forget your essentials when you leave – so you can do a quick repair or touch up and be ready for that next great adventure.

Its all about your hair

Take special note of the local weather in your destination, for this will determine your haircare. Generally, you can’t go wrong with a drop or two of nourishing oil. In lieu of a conditioner, traveling with a product such as Moroccan Oil will help you comb through tangles while soothing brittle, dry ends. Ever the multi-tasker, Moroccan Oil will also help against frizz and static!

And if all else fails…

Make sure you have done the research and looked for a local spa for that special treatment.  We recommend The Workshop at Cabarita Beach and have personally experienced a wonderful massage, manicure and facial.  They have some great yoga classes too – meaning you can keep up with your fitness program whilst on holiday.  When you’ve finished there, pop over to Marty’s at Caba or the Pandanus Cafe (Cabarita Beach Surf Club) or for a great breakfast/lunch/brunch.

Follow these tips and you will continue to look and feel great throughout our holiday.

Top tips for planning a Girls Weekend

Top tips for planning a Girls Weekend

Top tips for planning a Girls Weekend
Top tips for planning a Girls Weekend

There are many types of holidays you can take we’ve come up with some top tips for planning a girls weekend.  These weekends are not only great to catch up with your besties – away from your partner, kids, pets etc, but a real chance to have some fun, spa-time pampering and laughs – recharging the batteries and remembering what life was like “pre-commitments”.  Coming away with a real sense of relaxation is a great way to have a holiday over a (long) weekend, with a chance to feel refreshed after this mini=break.

We’ve been inspired by a great article from Jan Ross, but we have changed it quite a bit and added in our own extras.

So, how do you plan/organise your girls’weekend?  Well, below are our tips.

1. Your guest list

Can be the make or break of any holiday/event and a girls weekend is no exception!  Choose wisely with friends who share your interests but are willing to have a bit of fun too.  New experiences can be fun, so this can be a safe way to try something new.

2. Talk about money

What is your budget?  Are you planning to eat in or dine out every night?  Be conscious that some besties may be on a budget or saving for something important so think about a range of activities to suit all…  Maybe one restaurant meal, but plenty of “at home” meals too.  What price per head is your accommodation?

3. Choosing your accommodation

Are you thinking 5-star Resort or Luxury Beachfront holiday home?  Are you thinking camping or glamping?  We’ve done some comparisons and you might be surprised at the result.  Are some girls willing to share rooms?  What are the bed configurations?  Have a group chat about expectations so everyone knows what is happening before you leave.

4. The fun bits!

Are you planning to lie on the beach but others are heading to the local nightlife?  Are you a mad shopaholic wanting to splurge at the Robina Town Centre or Harbourtown but your group keen on long lazy lunches overlooking the beach?  Want to visit Byron Bay, Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach or Pottsville?  Don’t be afraid to “split up” so that everyone has their own fun.

5. Book in advance

It is so hard coordinating everyone’s timetable to for the best chance of getting everyone in the same place is by thinking ahead – not only on your accommodation but your activities.  Some restaurants can be booked out for events (ie. Kingscliff’s Babalou Restaurant closes when they have a wedding on) so do some preliminary planning.

6. But don’t overbook yourselves…

It is supposed to be a girls weekend after all and that automatically includes some down time.  For frenetic travelers in your group, feel free to encourage their every-minute-booked lifestyle but remember some of your group may prefer to just chill…  We can recommend a local day spa for pampering too – The Workshop at Cabarita Beach.

7. Plan for emergencies

Or as I often say to my teenagers – an “exit plan”…  Things not turning out as expected?  have a plan available for a quick exit.  Sudden emergency at home?  How do I get there asap? Doesn’t have to be set in stone, but at least think about your contingencies.

8. The usual travel precautions

A girls weekend is not that different to a family holiday in the need to take travel precautions that you would do for a normal holiday.

9. Chill babe

Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Talk out any “hassles”.  You are all there to have a good time after all and you are so not the “Housewives of New York”!  This is supposed to be a fun, reconnect time with your besties so don’t let little annoyances ruin it.  If conflict arises, tread carefully.  sure, get your point across, but don’t let it ruin the whole trip – and move on so you can!

10.  Before you go – including book Online

Be it your accommodation, groceries, outings or spa treatments.  Once you have done your plan up think about how much you can book in advance.  At La Maison Pacifique we have a great grocery service where you can order through www.woolworths.com.au or www.coles.com.au and they can deliver direct to our beautiful beachfront property.  For $40 an hour (generally not more than one hour) we can meet the delivery, unpack the groceries, chill/freeze the cold items and have it all ready for your arrival – not bad, eh!

11.  Theme it up!

Like any great event, there can be fun had by themeing your weekend.  Not only does it set the scene (ie. Girls Spa Weekend or Gold Coast Nightlife weekend), you can have some good fun with some other options too – how about a “Singstar” challenge or a “Movie Night”?  Need to keep fit?  Can always do a Watersports weekend.  Dress ups can be fun too.

12. Just have some fun!

Who knows when you will get your next chance? We at La Maison Pacifique have hosted one girls group who have returned twice so far!  We love hosting these girls weekends as we know how important they are.  Being local experts, we also have a list of local activities and attractions – and don’t forget the events and markets.  We’re here to help.

…Have we inspired you to book your girls weekend by the beach?  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.

The Real Reasons Mums need a Holiday

The Real Reasons Mums need a Holiday

The Real Reasons Mums Need a Holiday
The Real Reasons Mums Need a Holiday

We at La Maison Pacifique feel that every blog needs to have a bit of fun with its articles – and we have found a great one to share with you – The Real Reasons Mums Need a Holiday!  Of course, we feel that the best family holiday destination is Northern NSW and our beautiful Casuarina Beach, but this one can apply to any holiday – anywhere…

Written by Lisa Oppenheimer and published in the Huffington Post, we feel that this article not only tickles our funny bone, but its message is there too…  So, to all you Mum’s out there who conquer the world with their cape (and sometimes broomstick!) each and every day, we salute you – and does any of this sound familiar??

Oh, we have done some edits on this too – just to keep it real for Australian holiday travel… 🙂

Common wisdom has it that moms need vacations to recover from the exhaustion that accompanies regular life.

Nooooo. The real reason we need a vacation? The two weeks leading up to it.

With Easter breaks on the horizon, herewith… a breakdown of the typical 14 days before a vacation. (Note: The term “vacation” used for context only — the correct term for travel with small children is “change of scenery.”)

14 days out: Begin worrying. You’re going to have to pack, find pet sitters, finish copious amounts of work, get on a plane with kids… leave the house. Start remembering how guilty you feel every time you leave Fido/Fluffy/Bubbles. Think about every possible circumstance that might occur while you’re gone. Make contingency plans for contingency plans. Begin wondering why you thought this was a good idea.

13 days out: Begin making mental lists.

12 days out: Begin making actual lists.

11 days out: Continue adding to list. Use both sides of page. Squish items into margins. Realize you should have started with a notebook instead of a single piece of paper.

10 days out: Consider workload. Resolve to finish everything ahead of time so you have nothing to think about on vacation. Laugh derisively.

9 days out: Make pilgrimage to pharmacy. Buy child-strength pain relievers, cold medicine, pull-ups, bandages, shampoo, antiseptic, sunscreen, anti-snake venom (if available), allergy relief, ear drops, antiseptic wipes, upset-stomach relief, nail clippers, emery boards, paw paw cream, aloe vera gel and an industrial-size box of tampons. You never know what you won’t be able to buy on site. Or, at least not your brands..

8 Days out: Rent compact car.  Stop newspapers (can you believe it takes THAT long to process for your dates?).

7 days out: Pull out suitcase. Set aside essentials. Add contingency items. Continue adding contingency items.

6 days out: Put away suitcase… replace with industrial-sized trunk. Change compact car to SUV. Call airline to confirm surcharge for overweight luggage.  Book excess baggage allowance online.

5 days out: Begin to panic about how much work is still left undone at the office. Calculate minimum amount of sleep required over next four days. Mentally consider how bad it would be to work on vacation.  Check your accommodation has wifi.  Reconfirm your booking.  Print out terms and conditions to read on plane.

4 days out: Begin assembling the carry-on bag. Realize it would be easier if kids had their own color-coordinated backpacks. Go to store and buy two kid-size backpacks. Hope they like colors.

3 days out: Return backpacks and exchange for different colors.  Re-print terms and conditions of accommodation to read on plane.

2 days out: Check airline website to see if there’s in-flight food service (hahahahaha). Consider essentials for three-hour plane ride. Go shopping for rice crackers, muesli bars, dried fruit, peanut butter sandwiches, black gold (vegemite). Worry that fellow passenger might have a peanut allergy. Scrap sandwiches. Go to store and buy cereal. Create optimal travel-distraction kit including paper, crayons, coloring books, tape, books, headphones, and tablet/ipad with endless loop of SpongeBob Squarepants.

1 day out: Confirm details with pet sitter. Stop mail. Recall story on Facebook about criminal who used info about delivery stoppages to know which houses to rob. Debunk on Snopes; reinstate mail and newspapers anyway. Make note to ask pet sitter to bring in papers/mail. Share garage door code with sitter. Realize that will be useless if the power goes out. Get a key made for her. What if she loses it? Give a key to every friend and neighbor within a two-mile radius… just in case. Lay out kids’ travel clothes including daughter’s favorite white sweatshirt. Recall last year’s tragic grape-juice incident. Make mental note to avoid on-board purchase of anything purple, red, or orange.

Night before departure: Search online for recipe using all perishables in fridge. Put finished meal in garbage disposal. Order a pizza. Run dishwasher. Do all existing laundry so life will be easier when you get back (ha!). Check in online for flight. Realize you’re not sitting with the kids. Briefly fantasize about the wisdom of this idea. Call airline to change seats.  Check terms and conditions for accommodation have arrival codes/key access information.

Day of departure: Wake up early. Shower, blow dry. Check email, finish last-minute work. Take last-minute inventory of packing list. Get children up. Pack essential sleeping toys including blankies and stuffed dog. Unplug coffee maker, toaster, iron. Make sure oven is off. Check again to make sure oven is off. Kennel Fido and/or do an exhaustive check to find Fluffy to make sure she didn’t escape when you packed up the car. Call her name. Offer treats. Beg. Plead. Open can of tuna. See Fluffy come out from under chair directly in front of you. Realize you’ve forgotten to refill older child’s prescription. Do speed pharmacy run. Sweat through meticulously crafted blowout. Return with 15 minutes to spare.

3 minutes to departure: Watch husband pull out small duffle bag and begin packing.

2 minutes to departure: See husband finish packing and throw bag into car. Resist urge to weep.

1 minute to departure: Check one more time to see if oven is off. Make mental note to remember to close garage door.

Departure time: Leave house. Hear child announce stuffed dog is not in the car. Return to house. Retrieve stuffed dog.

Leave house again. Arrive at airport. Call neighbor to make sure garage door is closed. Board plane. Realize you’ve forgotten your own bathing suit.

Order glass of wine — just make sure it’s white.
