6 Top Tips to Buying Swimwear online

6 Top Tips to Buying Swimwear online

6 Top Tips for Buying Swimwear online
6 Top Tips for Buying Swimwear online

Yes, summer is here and it is time to think about all the fun you can have in the sun!  But wait!  I need some new swimwear!  Oh…  But what about those few winter kilos that haven’t quite shifted yet…  No problem!  You can shop for swimwear in the safety of your own home and don’t have to brave the Christmas Shopping rush!

Thanks to Monica Bugno on 22 September 2013 who, with her fantastic Sirens Swimwear range (all available online!), has compiled for us all the 6 Top Tips for Buying Swimwear online…  Thanks Monica!…..

I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those people who generally hates shopping for swimwear. Now don’t get me wrong, I love swimwear, I just dislike the process. I hate the browsing, the decisions, the sometimes unhelpful/judgmental sales staff, the cramped change room, the hideously unflattering lighting, the pressure to make a decision on the spot, the whole kit and kaboodle.
Therefore, I’m genuinely surprised that I never really considered buying swimwear online before finding Sirens, but now that I’ve seen the light, I’m never going back!

So here are my 6 tips on how to buy your swimwear online and to ensure your swimwear shopping experience is a pleasant one this summer.

1. Know what you’re looking for. Generally you will know what style of swimwear will suit you (not sure, click HERE for our online buying guide). You will have been buying swimwear for a number of years and know what styles do or don’t flatter your body shape. Also consider what you will be using it for, lazing prettily by the pool, sweating it up in a game of beach volleyball or going for a surf?

2. Determine your size.
Take your measurements and study the sizing guide on the Sirens website HERE. Still unsure, call the friendly team for some assistance. Also read reviews to get a feel for sizing.

3.  Unsure of your size…Order your favourite swimsuit in 2 sizes.
Order the size you think you need according to the size chart, and then order the next size that’s most likely to fit. Keep in mind that swimwear is often on the small size. If there are a couple of different styles you think you like, then try them too!

4. Just try it, what have you got to lose?
You can’t know how it will look until you try it on. This is truer for swimsuits than for any other piece of clothing. It might look awesome or it might be downright embarrassing, but if a certain design catches your eye, you have to try it to find out.

5. Try them on and see how they look.
Try your swimsuits on in good lighting, when you’re in a good mood, the kids are in bed or out playing, in the privacy of your own home or if you have a couple of supportive girls friends, invite them around for a couple of wines to get their opinion. I am amazed at how many emails we get from ladies who have come back to buy more after amazing comments from their husband/partner. Always good for the confidence smiley. Sirens also hold in-home consultations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

6. Return the swimwear that doesn’t work for you.
This is the easiest part. Simply return any of the swimsuits that are the wrong size or don’t fit and Sirens will refund you the purchase price and cover the cost of posting them back. It’s a no lose scenario really!

If your still not sure about buying online OR Still want to try before you buy there are two options. Give the friendly team in the office a call, they are friendly and trained to handle any queries or concerns you might have.  Also, If you would still like to try before you buy or if you have a couple of girlfriends who want to try our Sirens Swimwear in the privacy of your own home, we can arrange an in-home consultation, just give us a call on  1300 306 977 .

….So you’ve made your selection and all you have to do now is book your beach holiday!  Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron BayPatrolled beaches line the coast.  We even have Lisa and Pete’s top tips on things to do in Kingscliff!  Check out our blog and news, location and attractions and what’s on and markets for more great tips and things to do on your Northern Rivers summer holidays!

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

Surfing on the Gold Coast – and surrounds

Surfing on the Gold Coast – and surrounds

Surfing on the Gold Coast - and surrounds

Now that spring has sprung and summer is on its way – are you dreaming about your summer holiday – and all the fantastic activities you can do on the Gold Coast (and Northern NSW)?  There is SO much to do – and it is not just limited to the popular theme parks.

The following “How to Surf the Gold Coast” article by Craig Tansley (and with a few additions from us!) has some great tips on surfing the Gold Coast – and surrounds.

It’s one of the world’s best surfing locations – ah, come on, let’s just say it… it’s the world’s best surfing location. Where else can compare? Hawaii’s North Shore? The waves there only break for half the year and when they do, they can kill you (and that’s without mentioning the heavy locals).

The Gold Coast boasts more than 57 kilometres of pristine coastline that’s home to some of the world’s most famous surf breaks – like the Superbank that stretches from Snapper Heads to Greenmount at the coast’s southern end (home each year to the Quicksilver Pro) and the infamous Burleigh Point – arguably the world’s best right-hand point break. But there’s also 500,000-plus locals vying for waves… and that’s not counting visiting surfers.

The best way to surf the Gold Coast is to get a little off the beaten track.

Tips for finding an uncrowded wave

How to surf the Gold Coast

Photo: Luke Shadbolt

Forget the points, go for a beach break! While there might be 500 guys in the water at the Superbank, chances are just up the road at Tugun you’ll surf perfect waves by yourself.

Because of rapidly shifting sand, perfect beach break waves can be found anywhere on the Gold Coast, and they can change overnight.

For your best chances of snaring some, try driving along Tugun’s Golden Four Drive and checking any side street that takes you to the beach.

Keep heading up to Palm Beach and do the same, and if it’s crowded, paddle 100 metres further up from the crowd – on the Gold Coast, people tend to cluster.

Also try the beach breaks of Broadbeach, they’re remarkably empty, or go beyond Main Beach to the Gold Coast Seaway for the emptiest waves of all.

Go further beyond

South Stradbroke Island has some epic beach breaks – spread out over 30 kilometres of empty coastline. Paddle across the seaway and walk to the beach; or if it looks too intimidating (there’s lot of boats and it’s sharky), you can take a boat across.

Drive to the Southport Spit (past Sea World) and take a water taxi (if there’s a group of you, or wait till they fill it up with other guests) or take a ferry from Runaway Bay Marina every day at 10.30am.

Our tip – don’t forget the beautiful northern beaches of NSW.  Often quieter than the Gold Coast (meaning you can miss the crowds but still enjoy all the beach has to offer), there are some great locations for a surf.  Think Cabarita Beach; Salt Beach Kingscliff and Kingscliff Beach.  There is of choice of great surf schools to – our favourites In2Surf, Watersports Guru (for more than just surfing) and the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

How to surf the Gold Coast

Best apps and websites

The best websites to check all conditions for surf on the coast, which include live surf cams, swell predictions and surf reports, are Coastal Watch and Swellnet. You won’t even have to drive to check the waves.

Download the Hurley Surf and Seabreeze apps – these will give you surf reports and photos at beaches up and down the coast and predicted wind and swell heights from Coolangatta up to the Seaway at Southport.

Our tip – check out the surfcams at Cabarita Beach and Kingscliff too!

Best feed after a surf

The best thing about Gold Coast feasting is its surf clubs – where else on earth has so many public clubs spread-eagled on the most expensive real estate? You’re guaranteed reasonably priced burgers and bacon and eggs – the best being the Rainbow Bay Surf Lifesaving Club with its views over the Superbank; the Palm Beach Surf Club, built a few metres from the sand; and the Southport Surf Club.

How to surf the Gold Coast

Little St Kilda Café. Photo: Naked City Guide.

For a few bucks more, the best post-surf feed on the coast is at the Little St Kilda Café in Palm Beach. Try the brekky stack with baby spinach, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, tomato, and hash browns all stacked with a fried egg on top and drizzled with aioli.

For a cheap local’s feed, with the best burgers on the southern end of the coast, try JJs in Tugun. You can cet an old-fashioned burger for less than $7.

And if you’re keener for a beer than a burger, head to QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise, host of the ASP 2013 World Surfing Awards. The $3 Taco Tuesdays in Stingray Lounge are a must.

Our tip – our favourites in Northern NSW include Cabarita Beach Surf Club and Kingscliff Surf Club.  However, there are a great many fantastic cafes and restaurants (including our favourites) at Kingscliff (Mockingbird Cafe, Red Monkey Cafe), Salt, Kingscliff (Fins Restaurant), Cabarita Beach (Blue Rose Cafe, Marty’s at Caba) and Pottsville (White Jade Cafe/Restaurant).

…and if you are stuck for ideas on what to do in Kingscliff, locals Pete and Lisa have some great ideas for you – or check out our What’s on and Markets page!

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

6 Great Travel Gadgets – Tech Edition

6 Great Travel Gadgets – Tech Edition

6 great travel gadets - tech edition
6 Great Travel Gadgets – Tech Edition

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, life is busy and we have so many opportunities to stay connected wherever we are.  However, what are the 6 great travel gadgets which can ensure you maximise your travel plans?

Inspired by 6 Tech Essentials for your Travel Bag By Jasmine France (Contributing Writer, Women 2.0), read on for 6 Great Travel Gadgets – Tech Edition.

Pitching new business, meeting with existing clients, and trying to recruit new hires sometimes requires a lot of travel. Or maybe you just want to stay connected whilst on holiday?   Make your trips more enjoyable by stuffing your carry-on with the right tech tools. Below are some suggestions to get you started.

Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Canceling Headphones

Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Canceling Headphones
Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Canceling Headphones

A good pair of noise-cancelling headphones should be the first thing to go into your tech travel bag, as blocking out ambient sound is key whether your aim is to relax or to get things done on your flight. The Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Cancelling Headphones are a great option, thanks to their comfortable design and useful features. The active noise reduction will take care of everything from the drone of the engine to whining children, while the unique “aware mode” lets you tune into important announcements with the touch of a button. There’s also a built in mic for taking calls and playback controls for your music. The QC 20i earphones aren’t cheap, but they’ll be useful well beyond travel time.

Logitech Keyboard Folio

If you can get away with it, a tablet is a much lighter and more compact option to travel with than a laptop. The iPad is a popular choice, but it’s hard to be completely productive using the on-screen keypad. You can protect the device and make it more like a fully-functional computer with a keyboard case such as the Logitech Keyboard Folio. This handy accessory includes a full-sized Bluetooth keyboard with an integrated magnetic flip case in a choice of four colors.

Belkin Wireless Dual Band Travel Router

Despite the fact that nearly every hotel on the planet now has internet, you can’t always count on the speed and reliability of the connection. Belkin’s Wireless Dual Band Travel Router is a good back-up to have on hand, letting you create your own personal hotspot. The router offers high-speed dual-band performance for all of your devices, so you’ll be able to complete all of your online work in a timely fashion. And it’s super compact for easy packing.

Kensington International Travel Plug Adapter

Kensington International Travel Plug Adapter
Kensington International Travel Plug Adapter

For the times when you need to conduct business out of the country, don’t leave home without an international power adapter. Kensington’s International Travel Plug Adapter has been on the market for years, it’s still one of the most versatile and affordable options. The adapter features AC power plugs for over 150 countries, and each plug is built right in, accessible via switches on the sides. It has an integrated safety release button, but a spare fuse is also included just in case.  Don’t forget to pack in a power board so that you can plug in all your tech equipment into one place (and you will require just one adapter!)

Skooba Design Cable Stable DLX

With all these gadgets and accessories–and the cables to go along with them–keeping everything neat and organized presents its own challenge. Pick up the Skooba Design Cable Stable DLX to make easy work out of this task. This compact, well-designed case includes 15 flexible spaces to hold cords, AC power blocks, adapters, batteries, USB drives, office supplies, and pretty much any other small electronics you can think of.

Apps, Apps and More Apps

One cannot overlook the usefulness of apps for any kind of travel. Some favourites for travelling in the US  and beyond include MyTSA Mobile, which displays real-time estimates for wait times at security checkpoints as well as tips for getting through faster; ParkMe, which populates parking rates and location and lets you book spots in advance; and FlightTrack, which provides real-time status information for delays and cancellations at more than 3,000 airports worldwide as well as the ability to view your flights on a zoomable map and see satellite weather data.

Thanks Jasmine for these 6 great travel gadget ideas!

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

Traveling Tips – Seven Habits of Highly Effective Travelers

Traveling Tips – Seven Habits of Highly Effective Travelers

We’ve done the research and now you can benefit from a range of Traveling Tips – Seven Habits of Highly Effective Travelers!

Traveling should be fun, with the most time possible spent on exploring, sight seeing, great food, wine and fabulous company.  Traveling will always have some challenges, but after finding (and trying) these great tips, you can say bon voyage with confidence!

Source: Seven Habits of Highly Effective Travelers October 8, 2012 by , SmarterTravel Staff

Tip 1: Taking Advantage Of Flight-Tracking Apps

Taking Advantage Of Flight-Tracking Apps
(Photo: Businessman with Mobile Phone, Departure Screen Background via Shutterstock)

One of the smartest things you can do with your smartphone is to download a good flight-tracking app. We recommend TripIt—with the pro version, you’ll get instant alerts about flight delays, cancellations, and gate changes. You’ll also get alerts letting you know as soon as online check-in is available, whether your airfare is eligible for a refund, and you’ll get help finding a new flight if yours is cancelled. At $49, it’s definitely pricey, but there are many other free apps worth your time, too. Make a habit of inputting your itinerary into a travel app before you take off, and you (or at least your smartphone) will be on top of the travel game.

Our tip – check your own airline’s website for flight information before you leave home.

Tip 2 – Packing Smart

Packing Smart
(Photo: Checking Off Packed Items via Shutterstock)

Do you travel a lot? Make it a habit to keep your suitcase stocked with travel toiletries and a carry-on bag packing list. Even if you’re not away every weekend, having the essentials ready to go and an idea of what you need to check off can save you lots of pre-vacation stress and prevent overpacking. Plus, if someone ever offers to whisk you away at a moment’s notice, you’ll be prepared!

Our tip – laminate your packing list and it will last longer (and you can use a non-permanent marker to tick things off your list before each trip)

Tip 3 – Checking In ASAP

Checking in ASAP
(Photo: U.S. Passport Over Laptop Keyboard via Shutterstock)

With airlines trying to squeeze every last penny out of flyers by turning exit-row economy seats into “premium economy,” your chance of snagging a good aisle or window seat (without paying extra) is dwindling. Get in the habit of setting an alarm on your phone or email to remind you exactly when your airline’s online check-in starts. If you weren’t able to select seats when you booked, this will give you the first shot at what’s open. If you already picked a seat, remember that oftentimes it’s the passengers who check in last who get bumped from oversold flights. Print your boarding passes at this time, too, and you’ll be able to ditch the long check-in lines at the airport.

Our tip – well, we can’t beat this one!  Great idea.

Tip 4 – Integrating With Locals

Integrating with Locals
(Photo: Two Smiling Women at Cafe via Shutterstock)

Make a new tradition and have one of your first stops on each trip be a bar, coffee shop, or restaurant frequented by locals and not recommended by any guidebooks. While you’re there, chat up friendly natives for their tips on what to do. By starting off every trip like this, you’ll often discover things you would have missed by sticking to a guidebook or concierge’s choices. Why not start a routine of dropping your bags at the hotel, then immediately heading out for refreshment at the quirkiest local establishment you can find? It’s a fun and informative way to ease into your vacation.

Our tip: Try Blue Rose Cafe, Cabarita Beach; Fins Restaurant, Salt Kingscliff; or the Mockingbird Cafe, Kingscliff.  All are favourites of the ours – and the locals!

Tip 5 – Doing Your Homework

Doing Your Homework
(Photo: Shocked Woman Reading Guidebook via Shutterstock)

Spontaneity is great on trips, but doing a little homework before you go can vastly enhance your getaway. A few weeks before you travel, try signing up for daily deal sites (like Groupon or LivingSocial) for your destination. You’ll get offers for local restaurants and activities that you can redeem once you’re there—all at a deep discount. Read up on the place that you’re traveling to, too—there’s nothing worse than finding out about an amazing event or attraction after you’ve returned home.

Our tip – tweedscene.com.au will keep you up to date for all local events just before they happen.  For planning, check our own What’s on and Markets page.

Tip 6 – Calling Your Credit Card Company

Calling Your Credit Card Company
(Photo: Woman Speaking on Phone, Holding Credit Card via Shutterstock)

Another important habit is calling your credit card company and bank before you head off to any far-flung destination. Many companies will freeze your card if it’s used outside of your home country, thinking that it’s fraud. A few days before you leave, give them a call and let them know the dates you’ll be gone so you’ll still be able to access all your funds abroad.

Our tip – Some banks offer this as part of their online banking.  Will save you the call.  Also, don’t forget to register with smarttraveller.gov.au

Tip 7 – Building Downtime Into Your Schedule

Building Downtime Into Your Schedule

It’s tempting to try to pack a million different activities and sights into your trip, because who knows when you’ll get a chance to come back? Get in the habit of leaving some downtime in your schedule. Without it, you’ll be overexerted and tired, and you’ll never have time to just wander and discover the unexpected delights that can be the best part of any trip.

Our tip – this is a great idea – particularly when travelling with kids!  We worked out that every 4th day would be a “down” day.  Having said that, we rarely used it but knew it was there just in case.  Remember –  if you are feeling energetic on your “downtime” day, that doesn’t mean you can’t go – it is just better to have it factored in!

Happy holidays – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

Wedding Furniture Hire Northern NSW

In on ongoing search for great wedding tips and ideas for Destination Wedding brides traveling to the Gold Coast/Northern NSW/Byron Bay for their perfect day, we have found Little Gray Station – the one stop shop for Modern Vintage and French Country inspired furniture, props and ideas to enable you to personalise your special day.

Firstly though, our Wedding Planner friends at Casuarina Weddings and favourite photographers – Figtree Pictures Wedding Photography – work closely with Little Grey Station to ensure your day is as unique as you are.  Figtree Pictures did all the photos for our recent Wedding Accommodation Video and as you can see, can adapt the scene to create the perfect atmosphere for your wedding.

So what sorts of props are available – well there is a lot to choose from!

Chairs and Sofa’s – perfect for creating lounge areas dotted throughout both the ceremony and reception areas.  Our favourite is the Coloured Button Tufted Sofa

Table and Furniture Pieces – Choose one of the vintage tables for signing your certificate of marriage in front of your guests

Glassware, crockery and dessert table items – we’re loving the mixed vintage porcelain dinner plates

Linen and Napkins – Add some colour with vintage embroidery or choose the classic pure white linen napkins

Vessels and Tableware – Choose some great jars like they did in the photo above for your aisle (with flowers) or mix and match with some tarnished vessels and everyone’s favourite tea light candle holders.

Add in some props, pieces and signs – Loving the chalkboards, lanterns and signposts.

And if you are not sure how to put this all together, Little Gray Station will work with you as your wedding stylist to build inspiration, creativity, attention to detail and most importantly “personality”.  There are some great examples of what they can do in their gallery.

There is also another way to personalise your wedding day – with your own scented candle – available from Jaabay Candles and which will enable you to thank your guests with something unique and beautiful created just for you.

If your guests are thinking about making a holiday of your wedding too – tell them to check out Lisa and Pete’s top things to do in Kingscliff NSW.

We also have some great information and contacts for your wedding (venues, planners, Day Spas, photographers etc) at our Wedding Accommodation page.  If you are truly seeking, beachfront resort-style accommodation which is private for you and your guests, think about luxury beachfront holiday accommodation.  It is more accessible than you may think!

Happy holidays (and wedding!) – dream about what is possible; believe you can do it; make the most of your leave; plan, book and enjoy your holiday; then dream about where you will go next!  It is your turn!

Listing your Holiday Rental Home

Listing Your Holiday Rental Home

Listing your Holiday Rental Home
Listing your Holiday Rental Home

There is a huge range of advertising opportunities for listing your holiday rental home in Australia.  Some holiday rental home websites are free, some charge an advertising fee, some charge a per night rate, some charges are based on a per booking costs and others a % cost of confirmed booking (ie. commission on sales) – and some charge a mix of the above!

These costs can mount up – particularly if you are already paying a property manager to manage your property.

On top of this, you may also generate bookings through your own website (which we definitely encourage) as this enables another no-fee option.  Many of the listing websites below request direct links to your website. Therefore, think about whether you need your own website.

We at La Maison Pacifique have a mix of all the above and our choices (and costs) – as at 30 September 2013 – are outlined below.  Many of these have links to our own advertisement so you can see what you get for your advertising dollar…  Free listings are always worthwhile – although they need to be regularly checked as I have found (when doing this blog) that some websites have missed our location off their location choices…

Accommodation Listings and Fees charged

Stayz

http://stayz.com.auAnnual fee + per night cost

Stayz is probably the most recognised site in Australia and has generated the most enquiries for us.

AirBNB

http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/257759no cost to owner, but guests pay a fee

Only drawback with airbnb…  Not really appropriate for our market – more geared towards accommodation where it is a room offer rather than a whole house.  You are unable to receive contact details for clients, which when doing our blogs and newsletters like we do, can be a drawback as you can’t add people to your contact list.

Owners Rentals

http://www.ownersrentals.com/property/casuarina-beach-south-holiday-rental-la-maison-pacifique-th-2403.html – Free listing with up to 6 photos, then Advertising Options

AusEmade

http://www.ausemade.com.au/nsw/accom/c/casuarina/casuarina-accommodation.htm – Free Basic Listing then Advertising Options

Alluxia

http://www.alluxia.com/accommodation/la-maison-pacifique – Free to list, although you can upgrade to an advertising package. Commission charged for each booking. Guests are charged an admin/credit card fee. Contact info@alluxia.com for more details.

The Big Domain

http://www.thebigdomain.com/large-houses/la-maison-pacifiqueAdvertising Fee

We have just listed with thebigdomain.com – their first Australian property! 🙂

Coast Accommodation

http://www.coast-accommodation.com.au/holiday-accomodation/nsw/northern-rivers-coast/kingscliff–casuarina/5259-la-maison-pacifique-casuarina/image/5Advertising Fee

Easy Weddings

http://easyweddings.com.au/WeddingAccommodation/Lismore/LaMaisonPacifique/Advertising Fee

Worthwhile if you are considering offering wedding accommodation as we are.

Flip Key

http://www.flipkey.com/casuarina-vacation-rentals/p381806/Free listing, then commission on confirmed bookings.

Holidayz

http://www.holidayz.com.au/images/e67706/la-maison-pacifique/casuarina-accomodationAnnual Listing Fee

Home Away

http://www.homeaway.com.au/holiday-rental/p153348 – Australia

http://www.homeaway.it/affitto-vacanze/p153348 – Italy

http://www.abritel.fr/location-vacances/p153348a – Abritel

http://www.aluguetemporada.com.br/imovel/p153348 – Alugue Temporada

For all homeaway.com bookings there is an Annual Advertising Fee

This is an interesting one.  Our experience is that we get lots of enquiries but yet to confirm a booking!  Part of this is because there is no calendar functions and we are getting enquiries for the same popular dates.  Good to add people to our contact lists (for our newsletters) though.

Lamaisonpacifique.com

http://www.lamaisonpacifique.com/description-rates/

This is our own website.  After a slow start, we are now generating a good number of enquiries through here.  All enquiries are added to our monthly newsletter subscriber list, and are given instructions on how to unsubscribe.  The process of creating a higher social media presence has been intensive, but is now paying off with greater numbers of website “hits”, enquiries and bookings.
