We loved having you and your family stay Jane and are so pleased that you had a chance to visit local restaurant Osteria and the Margaret Olley Art Centre. What do you look for in a beach house? Proximity to the water? For sure. Plenty of comfy spots to lounge about in? Yes. Peaceful location away from the high-rises and busy roads? Definitely.
Our home for a recent weekend away at Casuarina Beach, just across the border in New South Wales, ticked all of these boxes, and a whole lot more. La Maison Pacifique earns the grand title by being the uber beach house of your dreams – spacious, elegantly appointed and large enough to cater for a couple of family groups or a gaggle of friends. Stylish and supremely comfortable, it’s an A-list escape.
Arriving late on a wet Friday night, we made a beeline for the gas fire, which forms a striking centrepiece to the kitchen, dining and living space with its high ceilings and expanses of glass. The flames popped up with the flick of a switch and tensions began to slip away.
While there is no shortage of TVs in La Maison Pacifique – we counted three, plus DVD players, games consoles (Wii, PlayStation and XBox), iPod docks and the like – but they’re all cleverly placed in bedrooms or comfy media nooks, leaving the main space pleasantly screen free. We lounged on the large leather sofas while the kids loved the two cute “bubble chairs”. A 10-seat dining table brings the focus to eating and talking, and keen cooks are invited to plumber the flourishing herb garden just outside the back door.
Lucky Dip – Find Peaceful perfection at this home by the sea
Beyond the lap pool, at the bottom of the long garden, is a boardwalk and track through to a vast expanse of white sand that reaches from Cabarita to the south to Salt and Kingscliff in the north. The wild seas and stiff breeze on the weekend of our stay made for a bracing, beautiful walk the next morning. It’s amazing the diversions that an apparently empty beach can deliver – bluebottles, shells, even a washed up jerry can that housed a couple of uncomfortable fish: Dad’s chance to play wildlife warrior and release them back to the ocean.Coffee lovers should head north, towards the distant towers of Tweed Heads and take a left at access lane 11. A couple of blocks in is the popular Osteria at the Casuarina Domain development. An unexpected slice of Italy, Osteria offers cake and coffee, deli goods, and an excellent lunch and dinner menu – I recommend the line caught sardines with the pan-fried gnocchi with duck and porcini mushroom ragout.
Back “home”, we took a dip in the outdoor spa pool, nad then it was time to put our feet up and read, – or nod off. Where to put oneself though? La Maison Pacifique has – not counting the queen size beds in its five bedrooms – at least seven chill out zones, a couple with spacious, comfy sofas facing big-screen TVs, cushioned bench seating around a large outdoor table, and other thoughtful groups of two or three seats, with stacks of magazines and books in case you’ve neglected to bring your own.
Live the Dream… Escape the everyday and soak up the serenity at La Maison Pacifique, Casuarina Beach
Guest with a keen design eye will find much to admire, with the main suite offering some real wow factor. Bedroom and bathroom blend into one, with a free-standing bath surrounded by floor-set mood lighting that changes colours while you soak. The bed, a high set, four poster Balinese-style number, invites lounging, contemplation (a Buddha hovers above the headboard), and, naturally, romance – unsurprisingly, La Maison Pacifique is a popular boutique wedding destination.
Leaving such luxury and comfort behind is never fun, but spirits were lifted by a detour up the Tweed River to the Margaret Olley Art Centre at Tweed Regional Gallery, Murwillumbah. A re-creation of the much-loved artist’s home and workspace, the display is at once poignant and fascinating, and inspired interest in visitors young and old. Fortify yourself at the gallery’s excellent cafe before hitting the road home.

Toast the Coast – Gold Coast Selections

Hellenika, older sibling to newcomer The Fish House, is the closest you’ll come to Greece in the sunshine state. Sink your teeth into sikoti (pan-fried chicken livers), saganaki (grilled sheep’s milk cheese) or htapodi (char grilled giant octopus) over ouzo at the bar or hunker down with a bottle of Greek indigenous wine and the arni sto fourno – a 1kg serve of baked junee lamb – inside the tavern. Exposed brick, timber tables and an oversized wine fridge walk the line between rustic and slick.
Seaduction Restaurant and Bar

Housed on the first floor of Soul Surfers Paradise, Seaduction is arguably one of the coast’s most glamorous eating spots. A hunk of jamon, perched on a red vintage slicing machine, greets diners en route to the dining room with its floor-to-ceiling glass panels to showcase beachfront views. Executive chef Steve Szabo‘s skills shine through the dessert menu, with playful dishes such as chocolate pave with sheep’s milk yoghurt and a bonsai toffee apple.

As the name suggests, share plates are the bread and butter of this smartly-packaged Broadbeach haunt, which has some serious culinary talent lurking behind its casual facade. Raw plates are artistically strewn with peppered emu, pickled beetroot and celeriac or kingfish, smoked mayo and jamon, while ‘thing on toast’ includes rare beef with truffled manchego custard. The signature dish – egg in a jar – jumbles truffled hen’s egg with confit duck and mushroom ragout. The beachy vibe and laid-back staff make this the perfect place for a long lunch or lazy evening.

Don’t let the unexpected location put you off – this small restaurant, nestled in a slew of shops alongside the Gold Coast highway, is worth seeking out. Owner-chef Daniel Ridgeway shows restraint with his use of the prized tuber, which is shaved over cauliflower soup, rolled in a quail ballontine and creamed with potatoes. The rest of the menu is a mash-up of classic Spanish, French and Italian fare, beautifully plated with careful attention to detail. If you can’t decide between the tempting desserts, opt for the assiette plate, with a small taste of each.
Room 81
Room 81 81 Surf Parade, Broadbeach +61 7 5592 2250
Another operation trumping the hotel dining presumption, Room 81 is the slick restaurant found at the entrance to the Gold Coast’s Sofitel. Specials such as confit prawns with brown butter, spring vegetable salad, cauliflower cream and ‘green apple cloud’ show off the serious kitchen skills, as do prettily-plated desserts like peanut parfait with salted caramel cream, raspberry gel and chocolate cookie crumble. Come Sunday, fine dining gives way to cocktails, tapas and live music as young locals assemble with a glass of something from the lengthy lists of vintage and NV champagnes.

Tucked well away from the tourist crowds, Fellini does Gold Coast dining at a different pace. Request a waterside table to take in the mega-million yachts bobbing on Marina Mirage and the city skyline across the river. All of the Italian classics – carpaccio, saltimbocca di pollo, tiramisu – are on the list, as well as plenty of fresh seafood options. Nibble on starters such as crispy soft shell mud crab fritters with a fennel and apple salad or baby zucchini flowers filled with spanner crab meat.

Yes, Bazaar is a hotel buffet, but this ‘interactive’ restaurant goes above and beyond regular offerings. Weekend brunch begins with a glass of prosecco and a trip to the raw bar – packed with oysters, prawns and whatever seafood is good on the day. The fruit is fresh, the omelettes made to order and the petite fours excellent. Dinner is more fresh seafood, plus steaks cooked to order, roast pork and fish fillets sliced from the whole beast, plus an extensive variety of dumplings and other small tastes. In short, there’s something for everyone.

We were SO disappointed yesterday when we realised that some of our dates for our brides have already been booked for other guests! Did you know that there is a patrolled beach 365 days a year at Salt Kingscliff? As the wonderful Australian Volunteer Surf Lifesavers take a break across the beautiful beaches in Australia, they hand over their flags to Lifeguards at Salt Village Kingscliff NSW for the winter season.
The beach is a real attraction all year round along the Tweed Coast. With easily accessible beaches from Tweed Heads to Byron Bay, winter is a great time of year with mild weather, sunny days and cool evenings – enabling the perfect atmosphere for a luxury weekend getaway or a perfect week long mid-year break.
Salt Village Beach, nestled between the coastal townships of Kingscliff and Casuarina is the optimum place to enjoy a winter swim or surf. Hosting a range of luxury accommodation options (from luxury hotels to beachfront holiday homes), and awarded restaurants (including Fins Restaurant by Steven and Morgan Snow), now is the time to visit for a perfect winter escape!

Golf is another popular past-time on the Tweed Coast with a range of golf courses available from the local Chinderah Golf Links to the Ocean Shores Country Club. If you are keen to go further afield (but still within an hours’ drive), there is a whole selection of 9-18 hole golf courses available just over the border on the Gold Coast.

Ok, so we remain a little excited about our wonderful new garden area, incorporating our bush tucker, herb, tea, tropical and orchard fruits sections. I have taken a few photos for you – below you will find our Bush Tucker Garden – the photos album!
What you will also notice is the most amazing grassed area, lined and ready to go for some great touch footy championships amongst our guests. This new garden area can be reached by entering through our new “secret” door – hand picked from an old Queenslander and a perfect entrance to the wide open spaces of the garden.
…and when you are all exhausted after your exertions, there is nothing better than sipping a cool drink poolside with our refurbished pool deck and new outdoor furniture (direct from Cosh Living) or maybe perch on our funky, red, designer bar stools as you chat whilst preparing a great meal (using the cookbooks we have on hand – including Local Steven Snow’s “Byron Cooking & Eating” or a great selection of Donna Hay Cookbooks…)

It has been a little busy in March and April this year – starting off with a very successful Wedding Open Day at Osteria, then coordinating all our bookings over these last few months. We are delighted to say that occupancy has been terrific, although we are starting to free up in May. If you are considering coming to our beautiful region in the next few months, there is still plenty to see! The whales start arriving on the Coast in June (through to November) and we particularly enjoy the influx of visitors we get wanting to escape the southern winter for a milder, beautiful break on the Tweed Coast. There is plenty to see and do, so don’t forget to follow us on twitter (@MaisonPacifique) for your weekly updates on What’s on in our region.
Newsflash – our new Garden and Car parking area opens in May, 2014!
Yes, it is true! Our neighbours have been eagerly watching the development of our two blocks of land adjoining our northern boundary at La Maison Pacifique. With the expert help of Dave, our fabulous gardener, we have not only developed a herb garden on the main La Maison Pacifique site (basil, rosemary, mint etc), but have developed the blocks into an organic, tropical, citrusbush tucker garden paradise! We will be developing a map for our guests outlining all our plants but you can expect to see frangipanis, a citrus orchard, herbs, bush tucker, teas, tropical plants and a large grassed area, perfect for your fun games with your families! So, when you book with us now, you will not just get almost 700m2 of land for our beautiful main property but a new attached garden (through the secret door!) of almost 1500m2. Yes, we are trying to keep the bush turkeys from tearing up the plants (a natural hazard in our area), but as our trees and bushes grow, there will be multiple opportunities to not just sit in the garden, but eat the bush tucker and (eventually) pick the fruit from our citrus orchard.. Imagine your photo opportunities too. 🙂
The garden is fenced off, and within the fences are two new car parking areas – each with enough space for two cars. So, where there is more than one family staying, you now have secure parking – behind our new gates.

When it comes to odd facts, they don’t come much odder than the fact that this charming Tweed village was named after the mythical Celtic giant Fingal who reportedly built the famous Giant’s Causeway in Ireland.
Fingal Head is situated just across the Queensland border in the Northern Rivers/Tweed Coast area of Northern NSW and is a mecca for those who like to be close to the Gold Coast, but enjoy the quiet serenity of this beautiful border town.

As you know we love promoting local things to do in and around our beautiful, luxury, beachfront holiday home – La Maison Pacifique – in Casuarina so we have had a chat to another local – Carla – and put together for you “Carla’s Top things to do in Kingscliff” NSW.
Firstly though – a little about Carla. Carla is a local business owner – of the store “On Kliff” on Marine Parade in Kingscliff. As a long term resident and friend of many, Carla’s is the place to shop for the latest fashion in Northern NSW (at least we think so!). As a fashion designer herself – and with her own label – Mode Village – where all her fashions are manufactured locally on the Gold Coast, Carla has a unique eye and a stylist’s approach to making her clients look great. One thing I really appreciate when I visit Carla is that she is not shy about saying what styles and fashions would suit you best – and she is right too!

When planning your wedding there are many decisions that you have to make – including favours. Wedding Candles are a great choice for wedding favours and at our stand at the recent Osteria Wedding Open Day, we offered a free, specially designed Jaabay Candle with our own signature scent “Montego Bay” to all visitors to our stand who signed up to our regular monthly newsletter.
So, why did we decide to go with Jaabay Candles and put our own Wedding Candle favours together? Well, the owner, Sally and I decided that we want all our guests who stay at the beautiful La Maison Pacifique to leave with a lasting memory of their stay.

We’ve found a great UK article on the best way of avoiding holiday rental scams – and which compliments our earlier articles “Why Rent a Holiday Home” and “Tips for Renting a Holiday Home“. Below we have gone into a bit more detail about avoiding scams as we have adjusted the aforementioned article’s comments for an Australian holiday rental context and added a couple of our own tips as well!
Many prospective travelers/holidaymakers can be nervous about booking online for their holiday rental homes. Yes, we all need to show caution when booking holiday homes, villas and apartments, but there are ways to minimise your risk of being scammed.
Holidaymakers can be vulnerable when booking holiday lets online, especially when looking for bargains and last-minute deals. Even booking through one of the leading holiday rental and letting websites can involve risk. Having said that, many online sites (such as stayz.com.au) request a copy of the title deed for the property so they can check this against the true owner names. Always a good sign.
To avoid being scammed by bogus holiday rentals, follow these steps to check if a holiday home, apartment or villa is genuine before booking.
How can I check if a holiday rental property is real?
- If booking through arental listing site the adverts may show (near the contact details at the bottom) how long the property has been advertised on the site. The length the advertiser has been on the site is usually a good indicator of the owners experience. The longer the better.
- Is the holiday rental home listed on other online booking sites? Each time a holiday rental is listed on a site, they must undertake standard checks to prove they are legitimate. This may include a copy of their property title deed (per above).
- Does your holiday rental home have its own website? Is it more than just a one pager and does it provide information on local activities and/or attractions? Does it have a blog and newsletters? All of these things can show a commitment to building their business and online presence.
- Does your holiday rental home have a social media presence? Can you find it on twitter, facebook, google+, Linked in and Youtube? Do these listing match with what is provided on the other websites? Is the message consistent. If there are anomalies, investigate further.
- Although many holidaymakers now book holidays via email and online forms without speaking to owners, speaking to someone on the phone can be reassuring that the holiday home is genuine and as advertised. Call or email the owner/property manager and ask questions about the location, good restaurants, local beaches, nearest supermarket, tourist attractions etc. to get a feel for the place. Serious rental owners will be happy to oblige.
- There are opinions that testimonials and reviews can be ‘phoney’ – but ones that can be verified are a good sign of trust. Some of the rental sites feature reviews from past guests, read through them and see if what they are saying matches what the property offers.
- Do you have contact details for the owner, including both holiday let address and phone number? Although some owners will be unwilling to disclose these on their websites due to their own fraud concerns, there should be no problems getting these at the booking contract stage when the owner knows you are serious. If you have concerns, ask for a utility bill for proof of ownership.
- Once you have these details turn to the search engines to do some research on the owner, the property, phone number etc. By entering the address into Google maps you should be able to verify the address and on some instances, use Google street view to see the actual holiday let. Do the photos on the advertisements match the images on street view?
- Is information on the terms and conditions readily available? The property owner/manager should send you a confirmation email, which outlines the terms and conditions of the holiday before you book.
- Are availability calendars updated? Although some advertisers leave theirs all available to try and sell alternative dates to enquirers, a calendar showing all available could be a ‘flag’ as scammers tend to re-sell peak weeks, as these are the most expensive. If unsure, again, check with the property owner/manager.
- If the owner has their own website, do a whois lookup which shows details of who owns the website domain. Does it match the owners details provided (mindful that some owners name their property managers rather than themselves? How long has the domain been registered for?
- …and don’t discount word of mouth! Know anyone who has been to your planned location recently? Does anyone know the property? If it has come recommended, that can be the best check of all!
Protecting payments
The level of protection you have depends on how you pay for your holiday. Consider the following payment options before you send any money.
- Personal cheques and electronic bank transfers are the preferred method of payment for many holiday let owners, so don’t be alarmed if this is the only payment method available. However, once the cheque or money transfer is cashed, there is very little consumer protection and it will be difficult to recover funds in cases of fraud. Following the steps above and sending a cheque by post to an address, not a post box can help safeguard against fraud.
- Some owners may have a PayPal account, which allows you pay online via credit card. Payments by PayPal are covered for 45 days after payment, so if you pay your balance 6-8 weeks before (which is standard practice) this should give you enough time to make a claim following a fraud.
- Paying by credit card offers the most comprehensive protection from fraud. The problem is that most holiday let owners don’t offer this facility due to high costs. However, if you are booking through an agency they should offer this facility.
- Debit cards may offer some protection, but this varies so check with your bank.
- Be wary of paying for accommodation by untraceable methods such as a wire transfer company. (We don’t know anyone who would!)
- Common holiday rental payment procedure is 25% deposit and then the balance 6-8 weeks before departure. However, some have other terms and conditions. If full payment is requested up front be wary. Obviously late bookings (ie. 6-8 weeks before departure) will require full payment, but try and use a payment method that offers protection such as PayPal or credit card.
Don’t be afraid!
Whilst we can never guarantee that you will never be scammed, by following the above avoiding holiday rental scams – top tips, your risk of being scammed will be reduced. As always, if it smells like fish, looks like fish and tastes like fish, it is probably fish(y)!
